Donations Needed for Book Sale

Saturday, April 8, 2017, from 9AM to 3PM, has been set as the date for the DLC’s latest Spring Book Sale fundraiser. It will be held at the Dare County Family Recreation Center, 602 S. Mustian Street, Kill Devil Hills.  Please look for their NEW colorful signs, on the Recreation Center’s fence, the day of the sale.  The Rec Center is located behind the OBX Brewing Station. Cash and/or checks are accepted forms of payment.  Credit/Debit cards cannot be accepted.

Book donation bins have been out since the second week of February and will be available through the last week of March.  Please note the location of the current donation sites: Kitty Hawk/Southern Shores: PNC Bank, Ace Hardware, Xenith Bank, the UPS Store, Seaside Vacation Realty, Coldwell Banker Seaside, and Kellogg’s Supply in Duck; Kill Devil Hills: Sun Realty and Coldwell Banker Realty. Nags Head:  Ace Hardware; Manteo: Ace Hardware and the Dare Center. For large donations, please call the Literacy Council at 216-7773, to arrange a pick up.

In addition to material donations, the DLC is looking for many volunteers who might donate a small amount of their time. Set up for the sale will be Friday evening from 5PM to 7PM. Volunteers are needed to unpack and help set out the donated materials on tables. Saturday, volunteers are needed from 8:30AM to 5:00PM, to assist patrons, replenish sold materials with more inventory and help with repacking any leftover materials for transport to the DLC’s storage facility. The more volunteers that attend, make for a more efficient sale.  “Many hands make light work”. To schedule any amount of time (from an hour, to as much time as you can help), please send an email to letting the Council know. You will receive confirmation via email.

The money raised from the Spring and Fall Book Sales is currently being used to purchase tutor and student learning materials for classes promoting literacy and ESL (English as a Second Language) for residents of our community. Classes are now being held and are free of charge.  Students are welcome to start any time. These two book sales are the main fundraisers for the DLC. The Council has received assistance from 13 businesses, community centers and 52 volunteers, in the past, including, but not limited to the Retired Teachers, FFMS and FFHS students, PNC and Yadkin Bank employees, local book club members, Dare Challenge Program participants, COA students and staff, DLC Board members and tutors and, most importantly, our community – without whom these sales could not be successful.

The DLC wishes to remind the community (and our visitors) that they collect hardcover and paperback books, CDs, DVDs and LPs that they can offer for sale at this semiannual fundraiser. They cannot accept magazines. With spring arriving March 20th, it’s time to do some spring cleaning by removing your gently used books from your bookshelves, replacing those winter reads with some lighter, relaxing, summer beach reading as the upcoming beach, summer season will be here before you know it! Remember your summer visitors – come and buy something for them at this sale.
