The educator,Parker Palmer, has said that if we are weary of increasing polarization in our public discourse, we can help begin a different kind of conversation in our communities, including in politics. These conversations are part of the building of the Common Good, whatever the political affiliation. The CommonGood calendar is a tool for the public to promote community events. Events should be open to the public, community-oriented, educational and sponsored by a group that is a not-for-profit. This includes government, citizenship and faith groups. These group meetings should be safe spaces for respectful conversations. The express purpose of the event should not be to change beliefs or affiliation nor be on behalf of candidates. Content that promotes, fosters or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or mental disability or sexual orientation is not allowed.
If your group and your meetings follow the above principles, you are invited to submit your event(s) at the CommonGood website. (www.obxcommongood.org) We reserve the right to edit or reject any and all material that does not meet our guidelines.
