Virginia Dare is the local organization of BPW/NC. The state organizations lobby for issues important to women, such as: pay equity, equal rights for women under the law of the land (we don’t have that guarantee yet), small business interests, quality health care, Social Security and other workplace equity and work-life issues. The organizations also partner with others to bring members access to financial advice.
BPW, as an organization, is not a service organization, nor are we oriented toward fundraising activities for charities. We are an advocate for women. BPW helps women help themselves through education and self-improvement. Networking is an important part of our work. Our Womens Symposium, held each fall, reaches out to women in the community with keynote speakers that focus on womens issues. This symposium is our primary source of funding for our yearly scholarship for women who are going into business or re-entering the workforce and need financial assistance for education or training.
Virginia Dare Business and Professional Women’s Club is the local organization of BPW/NC. Our club was chartered in 1978, under the leadership of Rae Eley. Our local organization has provided many kinds of programs of interest to the members since its inception. The programs at our regular monthly business meetings address many different areas and ways that we can improve ourselves personally, professionally, and emotionally. We want women to thrive in this community and to be all they can be. The state organization also partners with other groups to bring members access to financial advice and special programming.
