Holocaust Remembrance Service April 25

Holocaust Remembrance Service

Tuesday, April 25, 2017 | 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Every year the Jewish Congregation of the Outer Banks (JCOB) and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Outer Banks (UUCOB) hold a joint event to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. This year's Yom Hashoah service will be held on April 25 at 6:30 at the UUCOB Meetinghouse.
The service consists of prayers, readings and music. One moving ritual of the service is the “Reading of the Names” of some of the six million Jews who perished in the death camps of the Nazis. The custom of reading the name, age and country of origin of each person is practiced around the world. In some larger communities, the names are read for twenty-four hours but this part of the program will consist of ten people, each reading a page of names. If anyone is interested in reading names, please contact George Lurie at gymnix@aol.com or 255-1866.
JCOB held an essay competition based on the theme of the Holocaust for high school students. The winner, Sarah Skinner, a 12th grader at FFHS, and the runner-up, Suzanne Harrison, an 11th grader at FFHS will be reading their essays during the service. Both are members of Mr. Hanf's Journalism class.
The UUCOB Meetinghouse is located on Kitty Hawk Rd at the corner of Herbert Perry Rd. Members of the community are welcome and encouraged to attend.
