Chamber President Josh Bass, in honoring the Floras, noted the Citizen of the Year award traditionally is presented to an individual for lifetime service. In the case of the Floras, however, the Chamber couldn’t think of one of them and their contributions to the community without thinking of both of them.

It holds two blood drives, provides volunteers to Food for Thought to help pack weekend meal bags for area children in need, donates items for the Food Pantry, provides a scholarship to an area student whose post-secondary education has been interrupted or delayed, and participates in the Christmas Families program, part of the Angel Gift program coordinated by the Outer Banks Women’s Association through Dare County Social Services.
The Outer Banks Woman’s Club received the 2017 Non-Profit of the Year Award for their work assisting many in the community, including the Children at Play Museum, Outer Banks Hotline, NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island Star Center, the Outer Banks Seafood Festival and more. They are most often recognized for the work they do with the Angel Gift Program.
What is OBXmas Weekends? A promotion highlighting Outer Banks holiday events, running the weekend before Thanksgiving through New Year’s, highlighting these weekends and all the events in between. The idea is to drive visitation during the holiday season and “feature” different areas of the Outer Banks.
Roanoke Island Woman’s Club is looking for sponsors and applicants for their Thanksgiving Basket Program provided in collaboration with the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services.
Sponsorship opportunities include monetary and basket donations.
